The hilly soil and the weather conditions of Tuscany are ideal for grape-growing. The red wines of Tuscany, for which the region is principally known, run from Chianti – brimming with bright cherry fruit – to the richer, denser wines of Brunello di Montalcino and the intense Super Tuscans that rely on high quality Cabernet Sauvignon for their star appeal. Recently you will find wines labelled IGT Toscana, indicating that they are produced in Tuscany but contravene the strict rules on permitted grape varieties in certain areas.
