This region is the home of Sauvignon Blanc and a whole host of other crisp wines. Styles change as you follow the course of the river, according to the grape varieties planted and wine-making techniques practised. However, all of these wines display the same freshness and high acidity; rarely is oak used to ferment or age the wines. White wines, amongst the greatest in the world, are dominant, though the rosés delight and, when conditions are right, the reds can be excellent and distinct. Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Muscadet Vouvray and Saumur-Champigny are amongst the famous names of the region.
