The versatile Chenin Blanc‘s pretensions to classic grape status are mainly realised in the Loire Valley, where its floral aroma, apple and pear-like flavour and acidity contribute to long-lived dry styles and luscious sweet whites around Bonnezeaux, Quarts de Chaume, Vouvray and Layon, and, on occasions, full-flavoured sparkling wines. In the New World, it is South Africa‘s most widely planted grape variety, it is widely planted in California, Australia, Argentina and New Zealand, and occasionally produces quality dry whites when barrel-fermented.
21 Gables Chenin
Soft aromas of dried apricots with an oak and vanilla undertone on the nose. White fleshed peaches, almond paste and oranges on the palate.
Ernie Els Big Easy White
Dominated by citrus in its youth, the nose offers complexity with peaches, strawberries and fresh cream. A sprinkle of spice and a slight peppery edge contrasts the soft, creamy mouth-feel, while nutty and mineral notes gather further complexity. Medium-bodied and stylish, the palate ends with a long and dry, discreetly fruity finish.
Freedom Cross Chenin
A brilliant value wine from Chenin, the Cape’s favourite white grape. Full, ripe apple fruit mingles with tropical flavours leading to a clean, dry finish.
Green Drake Chenin Sauvignon
The wine has a bright straw colour and lively aromas of gooseberry, peach and quince with notes of cut grass and fresh herbs. Crisp and fresh on the palate with intense gooseberry and apple flavours, and zesty lemon coming through on the finish.
Ripe quince, pineapple and stone fruit with some interesting savoury undertones. A lightly textured palate with a hint of sweetness and to balance, a crunchy acidity resulting in a brisk finish.
La Agricola – Las Pampas Chenin Torrontes
A fresh, fruity and vibrant wine with aromatic qualities and a floral hint. A honeyed nose and creamy tropical fruit on the palate with bags of flavour followed by crisp, mouth-watering acidity to finish. Elegant and crisp.
La Grande Marque Saumur NV Méthode Champenoise
The best known sparkling wine of the Loire, made using Méthode Champenoise (the Champagne method). This example shows a notable finesse deserving of its frequent medals. Beautiful length and enjoyable ‘toasty’ flavours on the palate. Delicious style and unusually has Cabernet Franc in the blend.
Wide River Chenin
A clean and bright Chenin Blanc, peppery and aromatic with tropical fruit flavours of ripe fig and melon backed up with crisp, refreshing acidity. A modern style wine from the fertile Robertson Valley.
