Albana is a very dark thick-skinned variety, originally popular in Bordeaux it is now more usually found in the South West’s Cahors regions where it makes the famous black wines. It is also quite widely planted in the Loire where it is known as Cot. Small amounts of Malbec are planted elsewhere in the world which are usually added to Bordeaux-style blends, but these days its real home is Argentina, their climate adding plenty of fruit-character to combine with the plentiful colour and tannins naturally present in this variety.
