Established by Douglas Hillman in 1979, Wineservice has been family-owned ever since. Having worked for other wine merchants in the 1970s, Douglas noticed a growing interest in wine and set about starting his own business with investment from his son, Nick Hillman.
Basing themselves at Douglas’ home in West Sussex (at a cost to domestic harmony!), they began their journey to broaden the limited range of wine that dominated the lists and shelves of London in the 1980s. Wineservice’s first taste of success came when a major international hotel requested an “own-label” Champagne. Given that flexibility and an eagerness to satisfy were part of the fabric of the Hillmans, Wineservice duly sourced the Champagne, designed the labels and attached them to the bottles themselves…
This is very much the way business operates 38 years later; always looking to find a solution. Wineservice now imports and wholesales over 1,000 different wines from around the world each sourced carefully but still with an original personal focus.
